Jay Daly

Jay Daly

For nearly 30 years Jay’s trumpet playing has been a mainstay of Boston’s diverse music venues. From Symphony Hall to the Colonial Theater, from the Boston Opera House to Tanglewood, from the Tweeter Center to the Bank of Boston Pavilion, he has endeared himself to audiences and fellow musicians alike as “one of the most versatile trumpet players in the Boston area,” in the words of the Boston Globe.

Jay is a favorite with touring star attractions. His talents have been tapped by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, Linda Rondstadt, the Moody Blues, and others too numerous to mention. He is also frequently called on to play for Boston and Providence runs of touring Broadway shows, most recently Wicked, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Spamalot.  In addition Jay is the trumpet player and contractor for the North Shore Music Theatre, one the finest regional theaters in the country.

The Artie Shaw Orchestra has been calling on Jay’s encyclopedic knowledge of big band trumpet for years, engaging him as lead trumpet for many a tour. His rendition of “Stardust” with that legendary ensemble is a highlight of every performance and keeps the Billy Butterfield flame alive for big band fans all over the world.

The New England Brass has been presenting innovative concerts under Jay’s musical direction since 1980. From an educational program that is a great favorite with students all over New England to crowd-pleasing summertime performances to evening concerts that stretch the concept of what a brass quintet can do, this ensemble remains popular with audiences of all ages.

“Pops” orchestras in the NE area have been recently engaging Jay’s “A Tribute to Five Decades of Popular Trumpet Solos” where “his ability to replicate the trumpet stylings of Bix Beiderbecke, Herb Alpert, Harry James and others is wonderful.  He is a true professional.”  A. DiBartolomeo, conductor.

As an educator Jay is in demand both as a clinician and a private teacher. His students hold playing and teaching jobs all over the country. He is the author of The Daly Routine, a method book which has been enthusiastically received by students and other trumpet teachers.

Testimonial

"I have been looking for a good, solid, legit horn that I can use in the brass quintet, the theatre, and for the occasional solo spot in front of an orchestra.  I have absolutely, without a doubt, found that horn with the Sonaré.  It has the brilliance that I love in a trumpet but is slots so evenly across the registers, both high and low and loud and soft."
